The Start of My Journey
When I hit 13 years of age, I was introduced to Wado Ryu Karate. After 2 years of hard training the cartilage in my right knee had been damaged and had to be removed. This led to the tendons around my knee becoming weaker and causing a lot of pain. My physiotherapist, who was a bodybuilder with extremely large legs, suggested I go to the gym to use their hack squat machine to do close knee, front squats, to strengthen the tendons around my knee.
I did and that was the start of my 40 years career in bodybuilding. As time went by I developed this image of the perfect body for me. But then I soon realised I had fallen into the same trap that everybody else falls into when they start training, the idea that they knew what they were doing? I had no real idea as to what I was doing, how to train or even what was good for you to eat. Like others I watched, studied, and followed, even trained with those I thought I could benefit from. But still never reaching my goals the muscle size or power I wanted. It was then that I realized I needed help. After working with a coach I started to make progress and realized that all the blood, sweat, and tears, plus the time training, had been a total waste of time and money, don’t you do the same thing… believing you know best?
We all have to start from the beginning right. I learnt a lot from my coaches and the others who followed after. I was even lucky enough to run my own gym in Tyseley, Birmingham. I had a very interesting and successful 40 years training and the bodybuilding competitions I entered, well, I won some but lost others, in all, I had a great time meeting lots of people and bodybuilders… a beautiful challenge!
